It's Not Too Late!

It is not too late to apply for a second specialty program.  After you have decided, for whatever reason, that you would like to apply for a different specialty, it is not too late to upload a 2nd or 3rd personal statement for your additional choices.  We can help you with an expedited edit for the new specialty. U.S. Medical Residency Applicants 2023

My Dear Medical Residency Applicants,

Be very careful with your social media profiles, posts, likes and public remarks!  While you may change your settings to "private" mode, nothing is completely private once it has been published online.  Outside of the fact that your personal online legacy is going to live on way beyond your own years, residency selection committees for now will be able to check out all your information as they consider your medical residency application.  See yourself as others see you, both present and future.  

So that's the only advice for this morning.  You are smart enough to understand the reasoning!

Your U.S. Medical Residency/Medical Fellowship Personal Statement

Good Morning My Dear IMG's and FMG's, DO's, MD's & Medical Fellowship Applicants! 

I hope this finds you well.  Please contact us if you need help with covering what you perceive to be problem area with your personal statement.  As I mentioned yesterday, we can help you express in your essay what you THINK may be a major weakness in your application.  

The thing is, is that no one is perfect, including the program directors who are going to be reading your PS.  In most all cases, we have all built upon our weaknesses and turned them to strengths. 

Again, here are a few more examples of areas where we can help:

• Poor USMLE scores
• A gap in your resume
• Lack of medical experience
• Low grades in med. school
• Demanding family issues
• Advancing age of the applicant
• A change in specialty choice
• Not completing an earlier residency program 
• Over qualification
• Illness
• A PS that is too long  (We like to keep them at about 650-750 words.)
• A PS that is too short
• A disorganized CV 
• No research 

The only thing I can think of that is difficult for us to edit and justify is if you have a TOTAL lack of passion for the medical specialty or subspecialty to which you are applying.  That being said, it is still a good idea to cover your bases with a couple of specialty applications in somewhat related fields.  I mean, OBGYN/Surgery/Family Medicine, etc. is not for everyone.  Do not waste your effort on a "Plan D," but do consider applying for a second or third choice in case your first specialty choice doesn't work out.

Spring Has Sprung!

I hope you have all survived the pandemic!  As it seems the end may be in sight, many of us may be experiencing what an author from the Atlantic last week referred to as "SENIORITIS."  With senioritis, in the last year of high school and all of the exciting promises of a bright future, the student becomes a little lazy, distracted and forgetful.  We all may have a bit of PTSD from the trauma of the pandemic, so let's not be too hard on ourselves.  It's the time for patience and perseverance.

I hope that soon you will receive offers for interviews from some great programs in your target specialty.  

It is an exciting time!  Be sure to have an outstanding and printable CV, because you may have a few new items to include since your ERAS upload.  

Your personal statement is probably a "done deal," but be sure you can elaborate on any information from your PS and CV during the interview.  Listening is key.  Have some good questions ready and don't OVER practice to where you sound like a robot. 

God willing, you will have a few interviews, but if you don't, you might look in to and investigate medical residency programs outside of the match.

Do Not Brag in Your Personal Statement

Dear Medical Residency Applicants or Medical Fellowship Applicants, 

Over the years of editing personal statements at CVPersonalstatement.com, I advise the physicians to be humble.  When the program directors and resident selection team choose candidates, they can see on your CV what your accomplishments are.  Bragging about a high USMLE score, a "prestigious" institution you attended, etc., gives off the signal that you might be a difficult person to work around on a daily basis.  In your statement of purpose, strive to make yourself likable.  Along with other improvements, we can identify and edit the areas of your PS that may need some toning down in the arrogance department.  We want to help you convey through your statement of purpose that while you are accomplished and confident, you are also humble and teachable.  It's a tricky balance sometimes.

Keep Your Statement Original

 Hello Medical Residency and Medical Fellowship Applicants,

    As you move forward in the residency or fellowship application process, you have most likely put much of your valuable time in to composing a statement of purpose.  

    While it may be considered as helpful to look at other applicants' statements for your same target specialty, I don't advise it.  God forbid, you may inadvertently pick up a sentence or two and insert it in your own essay.  The general characteristics that make you suited for a specialty may be common among the applicants for that specialty, but the combination of your skills, clinical experiences, talents, learning styles, hobbies and personal values are unique.  Our goal is to help you state your suitability for your target specialty by supporting your claims of suitability with specific examples to illustrate the desired characteristics.  But back to my main message for today:  Do NOT lift sentences from others' personal statements off the web or from anywhere!  This practice could automatically disqualify you from consideration should the selection committee decide to do a plagiarism check.  AND, it may be that since everything is done online these days, the reviewers have embedded plagiarism check software!  More so, it is not ethical to steal someone else's words and pretend they are your own.  You are great as you are, and do not need it!

Some NEW INFORMATION about CV's from our Program Director consultant:

Hello again 2018 Medical Residency Applicants,

As you know, when you obtain an interview, you should carry along extra copies of your CV.  Before the official interview starts, hand your interviewers each a copy of your CV, printed on good resume paper.  I wouldn't say you have to give each one a copy of your statement of purpose, but it wouldn't hurt. (Be well prepared to answer and explain any claims or details from your PS if you do take it with you.)

So if you read the title of this post, I did promise you some NEW INFORMATION about CV's.  Our consultant Program Director said he loves a small PHOTO on the CV you carry with you and hand to him (and all the other interviewers).  He says he is better able to remember those applicants, and when reviewing the CV's a few days/weeks later, it puts a familiar face with your CV information.  He loves that added touch.  Now please be careful....do not make the photo too large, wear a shirt and tie, smile and fix your hair.  Getting a professional photo would be great.  Visualize a passport photo...maybe with the face portion slightly smaller, and be careful the background is appropriate.
